I don’t know how many of you can relate to this or not. But I’m dyslexic. It takes me longer to learn new things, I’m not the best speaker because I fumble my words and can’t think of the correct word I want to say and this happens a lot. But when you’re passionate about what you do and you know you can help others achieve their dreams, you put that aside and go for it.
Ever since the Pandemic started and the world shut down and a lot of people lost their jobs, my photography business thrived in 2020. That’s when I realized I wanted to do something to teach people interested in photography what I did, and how I did it, so they can have their own photography business and never have to worry about losing their jobs anymore.
With my disability and staying very busy with my business, it took me awhile to put this all together for you. I’m still working on adding more content, but all the content that’s in there now, is everything you need to build a successful photography business right now. The other content will add to the growth of you business.
I remember back when I decided to pursue my photography career. I was probably just like you. After learning about photography in school, I continued practicing as a hobby trying different things to get better. I took pictures of my friends and family for Free to build my portfolio.
Then I decided to start my business part-time while still doing my full-time job as an elementary school teacher.
So, the only time I could take any photography jobs was after work on the weekdays and weekends.
Business started off slow because I had no idea how to start a business. Which was fine because I had a steady income from my full-time job.
I spent a lot of time and money researching & marketing for my business making sure I was doing it legally. I didn’t know how to market correctly, so I wasted a lot of money.
I want to Fast Track you through that process so you don’t have to go through all that.
Also, being dyslexic has its challenges as well when you’re trying to build a business. Plus, someone told me I wouldn’t make enough money taking pictures to support my family.
But my passion for taking pictures for a living wouldn’t let that stand in the way and believe it or not, this is the first time in my adult life not living paycheck to paycheck and being able to go out and do things and not worry how much it cost.
But before that happened, I learned how to take better photos from other professional photographers in a small group here called the PPCF (Professional Photographers of Central Florida).
They meet once a month 6:30-9 at a studio in Orlando and would have a professional photographer come and give a lesson on a specific skill of photography like lighting, composition, settings, and things like that. I would get off work at 4 and drive 90 min. there and get home at 10:30 then get up at 5am for work.
But, that helped me tremendously because I’m a visual hands-on learner.
I did that for two years straight. After I paid for my third year membership, I wasn’t able to make it to any meetings that year because my business took off and I was too busy to go.
During those two years, I was doing family portrait sessions and they were few and far between and I wasn’t ready for weddings because I didn’t have all the right skills & equipment required for this very important event.
So, I needed to do something that would give me a client base that would use me on a regular basis.
Well, it so happened that my wife is a Realtor and when she got her first listing back in the day, she asked me to take pictures of it. This was after I recently finished my photography class.
The only equipment I had at the time was just my camera with the kit lens. I took handheld pictures with the pop-up flash.
You should have seen these pictures. They were amazing!
Just kidding. They looked like crap!
But that didn’t stop me from learning how to get better at shooting real estate.
My goal was to get good enough to be hired to take pictures of million dollar homes.
Learning how to become a great real estate photographer has generated more income for me to be able to do photography full-time. I still do family portraits, head shots, and other marketing material for small businesses but 95% of my business is real estate.
Since I live in the middle of Central Florida which is Davenport, I take care of my clients from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast of Central Florida.
One of my clients is a license Realtor in both Florida and California and she has flown me out to California (all expenses paid) to shoot a multi-million dollar listing in San Clemente after I helped her sell a 12 and a half million dollar home I shot for her in Windermere here in Florida.
I couldn’t believe it!
